Mumbai: Self-proclaimed religious leader and astrologer Captain Ashok Kharat has been arrested by police in Nashik on charges of sexually exploiting women and filming them in compromising positions. Police said 58 objectionable videos of women were recovered from the accused. Ashok Kharat is said to have connections with several politicians, industrialists, and celebrities, many of whom allegedly sought his advice on various matters. His arrest has caused a stir in Maharashtra’s political circles.
Photos of Kharat with Eknath Shinde and Rupali Chakankar, Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission, have gone viral on social media. In one video, Chakankar is seen washing Kharat’s feet and paying respect, while in another, she calls him her guru. Rupali Chakankar is also a member of a trust called Shivnika, where Ashok Kharat serves as Chairperson.

According to police, Ashok Kharat allegedly drugged women, filmed them, and later used the recordings to blackmail and exploit them. Officials also said he has been charged with rape and a formal complaint has been filed.

A senior police officer from the Nashik Police Crime Branch said that a First Information Report (FIR) was filed on Tuesday against Ashok Kharat for raping and sexually exploiting a 27-year-old woman on the pretext of false promises. The victim stated in her complaint that she had sought advice from Ashok Kharat due to marital problems, after which she came in contact with him. He seduced her and sexually exploited her by promising that if she surrendered to his wishes, all her problems would gradually be solved. Under this pretext, he raped her multiple times between 2022 and 2025.

Ashok Kharat has been booked under sections 64 (rape) and 69 (sexual intercourse by means of fraud or false promise) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as section 3 of the Maharashtra Prevention of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013.
