Prisoner died in ‘disconnected’ environment at HMP Liverpool

There were seven suicides at the prison between 2022 and 2025, according to a report by the HM Inspectorate of Prisons

A serving prisoner died at HMP Liverpool in “an environment of disconnect, delay and poor communication”. Michael Joseph Lunt died at the medium-security prison in Walton on July 17 2023.

An inquest, which took place in Liverpool last week, found that the 40-year-old had taken his own life hanging after suffering mental health issues. A jury handed down a conclusion of suicide.

In Mr Lunt’s record of inquest, coroner David Lewis said: “The deceased’s mental health was a contributing factor in his death. The events played out in an environment of disconnect, delay and poor communication of the parties involved in his care.

“These likely impacted his healthcare journey, but the evidence does not reveal whether this is likely to have contributed to his death.”

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “Our thoughts remain with Michael Lunt’s friends and family. We will now carefully consider the coroner’s findings and respond in due course.”

Mr Lunt, of Denise Road, Fazakerley, was one of three prisoners who died in a space of two weeks at HMP Liverpool back in 2023. David Jervis, 63, from Warrington, and Nathan Byrnes, 38, from Manchester, also lost their lives in what were similarly believed to be cases of suicide.

Jervis, who was serving a five year sentence for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl, died on July 12, while Lunt, who had been charged with attempted robbery, died on July 17. Byrnes, who was in prison for burglary offences, died on July 21.

In total, there were seven suicides at the prison between 2022 and 2025, according to a report by the HM Inspectorate of Prisons.

Tributes in Mr Lunt’s memory were posted to an obituary webpage. Liam Webb said: “Absolutely devastated with the news I’ve just heard, what a true gent you was Mick, thoughts go with all family and friends.”

Scott Deane said: “Rest easy big man. Thanks for all the good times over the years. Bringing all the lads together for the Holy Name FC and the pub after it great times shared.”

Gemma Thompson said: “RIP Michael. We are all still so shocked and saddened that you are gone but we will never ever forget you. Rest Peacefully.”

Stacey Struth said: “Rest in peace our Mick. Will always have our memories of growing up and will never forget your infectious laugh and your smile that could certainly light up the room when you walked in.”

Ross Ainscough said: “RIP Mick, had great memories following the blues up and down the country with you, will be a massive loss just a genuinely nice fella, I know you’ll still be with us following the blues! RIP fella up the toffees.”
