As we mark Earth Day, Surrey Highways is celebrating major progress in reducing our environmental impact while continuing to keep the county moving.
One of our biggest achievements has been the completion of our street lighting upgrade programme. All 89,000 street lights across Surrey have now been converted to energy-efficient LED technology. This significant milestone means we’re using around 65 per cent less energy, saving millions of pounds each year while also cutting carbon emissions.
Our commitment to a greener Surrey also extends to the natural environment. As the tree planting season comes to a close, we’re proud to have supported the planting of 48,198 trees across 140 sites this year, including schools, charities and farms.
Through community giveaways at libraries and recycling centres, residents have also taken home 3,584 trees to plant themselves. Alongside this, our highways teams have planted 782 new street trees, helping to replace those lost and respond to resident requests.
Cleaner transport is another key focus. Thirteen new fully electric buses have joined Surrey’s network, helping to deliver an estimated carbon saving of around 13,000 tonnes over their lifetime.
By autumn, 50 electric buses will be operating across the county, supported by further investment in community transport, bus priority measures and improved passenger information.
These modern buses offer a quieter, more comfortable journey, with features including free Wi-Fi, charging points and improved accessibility.
Together, these initiatives show how Surrey is taking practical steps this Earth Day and every day to build a cleaner, greener future for all.
