Banibrata Mahanta wins 2025 Muse India Translation Award for translating Hindi novel, ‘Lavanyadevi’


Banibrata Mahanta has won the 2025 Muse India Translation Award for translating Kusum Khemani’s novel Lavanyadevi from the Hindi. He will receive a cash prize of Rs 25,000. The winner was picked from 103 entries from 18 Indian languages.

Commendation Certificates were given to the following translators

  • V Ramaswamy for The Last Bench, by Adhir Biswas from the Bengali

  • Vidya Pai for The Bitter Fruit Tree and Other Stories, by Prakash Parienkar from the Konkani

  • Navdeep Suri for A Game of Fire, by Nanak Singh, from the Punjabi

  • Malini Seshadri for Kurinji Malar, by Na Parthasarathy, from the Tamil

The panel of 12 judges was chaired by a two-member jury consisting of Professor Sachidananda Mohanty and Professor Sukrita Paul Kumar.
