Breaking Language Barriers: Madhya Pradesh Launches Hindi-Medium Civil Engineering Course
INDORE – In a significant move to democratize technical education, a prominent engineering college in Madhya Pradesh has introduced a B.Tech course in civil engineering conducted entirely in Hindi. This initiative, designed to align with the National Education Policy (NEP), aims to bridge the gap for students transitioning from Hindi-medium schools to higher technical education.
The program has been launched at the Shri G S Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), a highly regarded autonomous institute in Central India. To encourage enrollment, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced a substantial financial incentive: students pursuing the course are eligible to receive a reward of Rs 2 lakh during their final year of study.
Addressing the Academic Gap
According to officials, the college has set aside 30 seats for this inaugural Hindi-medium batch, with approximately 20 students already enrolled for the current academic session.
Sunil Ajmera, head of the civil engineering department at SGSITS, noted that the initiative addresses a long-standing challenge at the institute. “Over the years, we observed that many students who completed their schooling in Hindi found it daunting to pursue a rigorous engineering curriculum in English,” Ajmera said. “The struggle to grasp complex technical concepts often led to student attrition. By offering this course in their mother tongue, we are ensuring that students can grasp the curriculum fully and sit for their examinations with confidence.”
Years of Preparation
The transition to a Hindi-medium curriculum was not an overnight decision. The institute spent four years preparing for this launch. Vivek Tiwari, an assistant professor in the civil engineering department, revealed that faculty experts meticulously translated technical textbooks and study materials from English into Hindi. Additionally, the college conducted specialized workshops to train teachers to deliver technical lectures effectively in the Hindi language.
For the students, the impact has been immediate. Rohit Sharma, a student currently enrolled in the program, shared that the course has significantly reduced his reliance on external AI tools for understanding concepts. “Studying in my mother tongue allows teachers to explain even the most difficult technical terms in a way that truly resonates,” he said.
Balancing Tradition and Competitiveness
While the curriculum is taught in Hindi, faculty members emphasize that the program is not designed to ignore the global dominance of English in the professional world. Students enrolled in the Hindi-medium track are also provided with dedicated training to develop essential English language skills.
The goal, as stated by the college administration, is to ensure that while students are empowered by learning in their primary language, they remain globally competitive and well-prepared for the workforce.
