The Punjabi Kitchen will be using fish from Grimsby Docks to produce its fish masala dish, among many others

A new Indian takeaway has launched in Grimsby with its owners promising a taste of the Punjab state. The Pasture Street shop, which had previously been a Chinese takeaway, has been closed for about five years and has now opened as Punjabi Kitchen.
With a full menu of recognisable dishes it is focussing on serving up flavours from the north western Indian state. The purely takeaway counter is also offering a range of meal deals, as well as fish and chips and burgers.
Amar Dastgir-Sheikh is the landlord of the property and has run Indian restaurants in the past. He has helped owner Paramjit Singh to launch the business which is already listed on Grimsby and Clee Eats and Just Eat.
He said: “With the Duke of Wellington pub over the road refurbished in the last year or so, I thought the opportunity presented itself quite well with a new business opening in what had been an empty building.”
Mr Dastgir, who was formerly a co-owner of the Agrah restaurant in Cleethorpes, says the eatery will bring distinct flavour to town. And its menu will include a fish masala on naan bread using fish from Grimsby Docks.
“It’s a different type of cuisine. The Punjab region is a different part of India altogether and it’s food is mainly based on Masala style. It’s rich in its taste, added Mr Dastgir-Sheikh.
The Pasture Street premises have received investment including new fascia and a complete re-fit of the kitchen space. An open-plan layout allows customers to see their food being prepared.
“They’ve had a really positive response from locals. And that’s with very minimal advertising,” added Mr Dastgir-Sheikh.
“The long time goal is to establish a stable business, especially with the economic climate we found ourselves in now. The hospitality industry has really taken a hit, and as you know, the cost of living is escalating day-by-day. So we want to firmly establish the takeaway in this first year.
Punjabi Kitchen is open six days a week, Monday-Saturday from about 3pm through to 10:30pm. It is located at 30 Pasture Street, in Grimsby town centre.
