Inspectors praise supportive environment at Pebbles Academy


Pebbles Academy was visited by a team of HM Inspectors of Education in March this year as part of a routine inspection.

The report highlights a number of strengths, including a respectful atmosphere, positive relationships between staff and pupils, and effective use of digital technology to support learning.

Students who attend regularly achieve National Qualifications and develop important life skills, including teamwork and decision-making.

However, inspectors identified areas for improvement, with a particular focus on raising attendance and ensuring all students receive their full entitlement to education.

They have recommended that the school works with the local authority and other partners to address these issues, including reducing lateness and boosting overall engagement.

Inspectors also encouraged further development of strategies to increase attainment so that all young people leave with suitable qualifications.

The report praised the school’s nurturing environment, noting that most students feel safe and respected.

A majority said they have someone to talk to if they are worried, and they feel the school listens to their views.

Most students reported feeling encouraged by staff and said they are generally happy with the quality of teaching.

However, feedback on homework and overall enjoyment of learning was more mixed.

The academy was rated ‘good’ for learning, teaching, and assessment, and ‘satisfactory’ for raising attainment and achievement.

Inspectors said they are confident Pebbles Academy has the capacity to improve and confirmed that they do not plan to make further visits in connection with the inspection.

Progress will instead be reported to parents and carers by the school’s proprietor.

The inspection forms part of the Scottish Government’s ongoing evaluation of school performance across the country.
