US EPA proposes major overhaul of NEPA environmental reviews
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed reforms to the way it implements the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), aiming to make federal environmental reviews faster and more predictable, while leaving environmental standards unchanged, the agency says.
The proposed rule would cap an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) at 150 pages, or 300 pages for actions of extraordinary complexity, against a current average of 661 pages, and require the EPA to complete an EIS within two years, down from an average of four.
