There are still problems at the Goiânia circuit, and this time they’re much worse than expected. A massive sinkhole has opened up on the track’s main straight, and organizers are working to figure out how to repair it as quickly as possible. The entire area has been cordoned off, and staff are trying to determine how to address the issue promptly.
Moto3 and Moto2 qualifying have been postponed, but the Sprint is currently confirmed for 7:00 PM, pending further updates at 6:00 PM.
Here is the statement released by the organizer: “Due to the heavy rains that have recently hit the region, a problem has arisen with the road surface on the main straight of the Autodromo Internacional de Goiânia – Ayrton Senna. The FIM and MotoGP, together with the local promoter, are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Due to the time required to complete repairs, when track activity resumes, the next session will be the MotoGP Tissot Sprint. Qualifying for the Moto2 and Moto3 classes has been postponed until further notice.”
Tome Alfonso, FIM Safety Officer for MotoGP, explained:“Due to heavy rains in recent days, a depression has formed on the track surface caused by soil displacement. It is located off the racing line, and we are already working to resolve the issue. If all goes well, we should be able to hold the MotoGP Sprint today.”
In the photo below, you can see the problematic spot. You can clearly see the dip where the asphalt has given way and the hole that has opened up.
