England medics rushed to help Jordan Henderson after he hurt himself during England’s celebrations, before he had to be carried away on a stretcher
Jordan Henderson was taken away on a stretcher and given oxygen in worrying scenes in the aftermath of England’s epic win over Mexico. The former Liverpool captain received medical treatment after landing awkwardly and hurting his arm while attempting to climb over the advertising hoardings during the full-time celebrations.
Henderson’s team-mates appeared to form a huddle around him as he received treatment from medics before he was taken from the pitch on a stretcher, receiving oxygen. Jude Bellingham was also absolutely furious about something that took place behind the goal, and Harry Kane had to drag him away.
Asked for an update on his team-mate, Three Lions captain Kane said: “Jordan [Henderson] just fell over there, I think he’s okay, just something to do with his arm.”
But fellow team-mate Bellingham revealed that Henderson’s injury looked serious. He said: “He’s in a bit of bother, but the medical team have got everything under control, best to not give too much detail when I don’t know too much what’s going on, but everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Boss Tuchel provided a worrying update on Henderson’s condition, saying: “Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over an injured his wrist, it looks really bad.”
It’s not yet clear if Henderson’s injury means the end of his tournament. It’s understood that the England midfielder has since been taken to hospital for further checks and treatment.
Henderson’s accident occurred as he and his team-mates celebrated a hard-fought 3-2 victory. After racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to Jude Bellingham’s brace, Julian Quinones struck back for Mexico just before the break.
Mexican belief grew further when right-back Jarell Quansah was sent off for a clumsy challenge early in the second half, only for Tuchel’s team to immediately respond through skipper Kane’s penalty after Anthony Gordon was brought down. Raul Jimenez added a penalty of his own to increase English nerves, but Tuchel’s side managed to see the game out.
A quarter-final tie against Norway now awaits, and the German boss said: “Very proud. We needed everything. It was super difficult. In the moments we thought we catch the momentum, we had setbacks. That is proper mentality.”
Before he added: “This team really mean it. When the going gets tough, they never give up, they never lose belief. It was one step more.
“We need to take this in. This is Azteca, it’s Mexico, a crazy game. We left everything out there, every single one of us. We need to take this in, now it’s full steam ahead.”
Reflecting on the victory in the BBC studio, former England forward Wayne Rooney said: “That was one of the greatest results, performances. They showed attitude, grit, desire, everything you would have wanted an England team to show they showed tonight.

“Going down to 10 we knew it was going to be difficult. They sat in and I was worried that we went too deep too early, but they put their bodies on the line.
“The centre-backs and Pickford were outstanding. We were the better team until the red card and then we showed a lesson in heading the ball out of the box, blocking shots, just brilliant.”
