CNN notified viewers of Donald Trump’s arrival in Turkey for a summit, and many immediately voiced apprehensions about how the gathering would unfold, expressing doubts about the president’s intentions.
The news organization posted the update on Tuesday, July 7, as Trump landed in Turkey before the scheduled NATO summit in Ankara, with the assembly of member nations anticipated to address multiple divisive issues stemming from the Iran conflict.
However, shortly after viewers criticized Trump as a “fraud” following reports of his $2.2 billion income during the first year of his second term, they swiftly raised concerns about potential outcomes from the meeting. This comes as Donald Trump was labeled “the biggest threat to WW3.”
Beyond anticipated difficult discussions regarding Trump’s critiques of the alliance and defense expenditures, Trump is also projected to deliver a significant message to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. That message concerns his readiness to authorize F-35 fighter jet sales to the nation, reports the Mirror US.
However, with reports of his interest in prioritizing aircraft sales to the country, numerous CNN viewers voiced skepticism that his motivations weren’t genuine – and that he would generate additional tension with other established allies.
“Trump’s heroic struggle with the problems he creates is beginning to border on dangerous tragicomedy and is looking less and less like serious foreign policy,” one individual posted on X. “Trump indeed has no problem selling his country for personal gain,” another wrote, while a third added, “Meaning at some point, Turkey will use those same jets against the USA.”
“Interesting move. Wondering what conditions or agreements are tied to this potential F-35 deal,” a fourth wondered, while a fifth snarked that it would depend on what Turkey offered Trump, writing, “Only if their ‘gift’ is large enough.”
Others raised concerns about the move given that Turkey had previously been removed from the F-35 program following an S-400 deal with Russia, expressing fears it could trigger widespread disorder.
“Will move considering how rocky the whole S-400 situation was, wonder if they’ll actually pull it off this time. Feels like it’s gonna be a chaotic summit tbh,” one person said.
“Turkey got booted from the F-35 program in 2019 over the S-400 deal with Russia,” another added. “Reversing that now is bold ngl.”
Despite a congressional ban on selling jets to Turkey, Trump signaled following his meeting that he remained open to pursuing a potential deal, noting that Turkey’s president had demonstrated greater loyalty than other nations previously supplied with aircraft.
“We have a better relationship with Turkey, and Turkey has been in many ways much more loyal than other countries that we think would be loyal,” he said during his meeting. “It’s a great plane, it’s the best, currently the best plane by far, and certainly something we will consider.”
