A huge fire has broken out at a recycling centre in a major UK city. Avon Fire and Rescue crews are tackling a fire at the centre on Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth, on the edge of Bristol.
Crews were dispatched to the scene at around 3.30am this morning (Wednesday). Thick plumes of smoke can be seen billowing into the sky. The fire service said: “We’re responding to a significant fire at a recycling centre on Kings Weston Lane, Avonmouth. A major incident has been declared. If you’re nearby, keep windows and doors closed and stay in doors where possible.”
Sharing an update on X, the fire service has urged the locals living nearby to keep their windows and doors closed. They said: “We remain at the scene of a significant fire at a recycling centre on Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth.
“Crews are continuing to work to bring the fire under control and emergency services remain in attendance. All personnel at the site were safely evacuated and there are currently no reported injuries.
“If you live or work nearby, please continue to keep windows and doors closed and stay indoors where possible to stop smoke from entering your property.
“Kings Weston Lane remains closed between the A403 St Andrews Road and Long Cross. Please avoid the area and expect disruption. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.”
Fourteen fire stations are involved in the efforts bringing the SUEZ fire under control: Avonmouth, Bedminster, Southmead, Temple, Clevedon, Nailsea, Pill, Portishead, Weston-super-Mare, Kingswood, Patchway, Thornbury, Yate, Chew, Magna.
Avon Fire and Rescue Service shared a latest update and said: “Our crews are still tackling a fire at a Suez recycling centre on Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth.
“Smoke from the fire may still be affecting the local area. Please continue to avoid the area while we deal with the incident. If you can see or smell smoke where you are, please close your windows and doors and stay inside where possible.
“If you are driving through the area, keep air vents closed and switch off air conditioning systems to stop smoke entering your car.”
