BBC presenter Kelly Somers revealed that Alan Shearer got in trouble with some of the staff in Atlanta minutes before England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina. The former Three Lions captain apparently went unrecognised by those who reprimanded him for doing something that was not allowed ahead of kick-off down on the pitch.
Shearer, 55, was trying to return a wave from his fellow Geordie, Dan Burn. The BBC pundit eventually shook hands with the Newcastle United player pitchside instead.
However, he was not supposed to be on the pitch at all. Hence, a telling off from the staff followed.
Somers revealed all to Mark Chapman during the pre-match build-up on BBC One. She said while standing alongside Shearer down on the pitch in Atlanta: “Before I hand back to you, Chappers, I do have to tell you that when Alan first came onto the pitch, firstly, he tried to wave at Dan Burn.
“He thought Dan Burn was waving at him, but Burn completely pied him; he was waving at his family.
“Alan has since shaken his hand and got in trouble with some of the staff here because it’s not allowed. I don’t think they knew who he was.”
After returning to his commentary position, the telling off had not dampened Shearer’s appetite for the match. He said on BBC One: “I am looking forward to it, and I am excited.
“Listening to those national anthems – that was brilliant. They don’t like each other, and that is fine.”
Shearer was bullish about England’s chances before kick-off. He said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “This Argentina team are a good team, but they’re not as good as they were four years ago, but they have a mentality and an unbelievable will to win. That counts for a lot.
“The way England are playing – they will believe they can get through. Although they score a lot of goals, they concede as well. There is enough evidence to suggest that we can score goals against this team.
“You cannot get away from the history. It is what we’ve been brought up on. What I watched on TV, the World Cup in 1986.”
