Indian Equities Snap Losing Streak as IT Sector Surges on AI Optimism

New Delhi: Indian stock markets staged a resilient comeback on Friday, successfully snapping a two-day downward trend. Driven by a stellar performance in the technology sector, the Nifty 50 and Sensex both closed in positive territory, reflecting a renewed sense of optimism among domestic investors.

The Nifty 50 climbed 84.80 points, or 0.35%, to settle at 24,175.65. Similarly, the BSE Sensex gained 330.92 points, or 0.43%, closing at 77,264.51.

IT Sector Leads the Charge

The primary catalyst for Friday’s rally was the IT index, which surged more than 3% to emerge as the day’s top sectoral performer. This bullish sentiment was fueled by Nvidia’s robust quarterly results, which reignited global investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence. Major technology stocks, including TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra, all posted gains exceeding 2%.

Beyond technology, the market breadth was decidedly positive, with 1,918 stocks advancing against 1,561 declines. This broad-based participation signals that the buying interest extended well beyond index heavyweights. Metals, Healthcare, and Pharma also provided support to the indices, while sectors like FMCG, Consumer Durables, and Banking faced pressure.

Macroeconomic Tailwinds and Sentiment

Market sentiment was further bolstered by softening crude oil prices, following renewed discussions regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the Indian government’s move to ease defence export licensing rules provided a supportive undercurrent for the markets.

Investor anxiety appears to be tapering off, with the India VIX falling nearly 4%. Market participants are now shifting their focus toward upcoming signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve, particularly waiting for the Jackson Hole remarks to gain clarity on the future trajectory of interest rates.

For those tracking professional analysis, several experts have released new stock recommendations to guide investors through current volatility, including Buy ratings on Indo Count Industries and Piramal Finance.

Technical Outlook

While the rebound is encouraging, technical indicators suggest a cautious approach. The Nifty 50 is currently trading below its short- and medium-term moving averages, and momentum indicators like the RSI (46.98) and MACD remain in bearish or neutral territory.

  • Nifty 50: Analysts point to 24,400 as the immediate hurdle (21-DMA). A sustained close above this level could pave the way for a recovery toward the 200-DMA at 24,700. Conversely, a drop below the 24,000 mark could trigger a deeper correction toward 23,800.
  • Nifty Bank: The banking index ended nearly flat, reflecting consolidation. With the index hovering around its 200-SMA, analysts anticipate that volatility may expand sharply once the index breaks out of its current narrow range of 57,250 to 57,800.
