PM Modi Deepens Cultural and Strategic Ties During Landmark Visit to Uzbekistan

TASHKENT – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day diplomatic mission to Uzbekistan concluded with a strong emphasis on cultural diplomacy and a significant elevation in bilateral relations, marking a new chapter in the friendship between the two nations.

During his visit to the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Tashkent, Prime Minister Modi was visibly moved by a touching cultural performance. A group of Uzbek students, who have been studying Hindi, recited poems penned by the Prime Minister himself. The Prime Minister, clearly touched by the gesture, remarked that despite Hindi not being their native tongue, the students captured the exact emotional essence he had intended to convey through his verses.

A Shared Cultural Heritage

The event underscored the deep-rooted affection for India within Uzbekistan. A prominent local Indologist noted that few countries share such a profound, innate connection with India. The influence of Indian culture is pervasive, with the greeting “Namaste” becoming a household term across the nation. There is a burgeoning interest among Uzbek citizens in Indian yoga, classical dance, music, and philosophy.

Highlighting the importance of philosophical exchanges, PM Modi proposed the translation of the ancient Tamil masterpiece, the Tirukkural, into the Uzbek language. Marking the 80th anniversary of the local institute, the Prime Minister suggested that such a project would allow the people of Uzbekistan to gain a deeper understanding of Indian wisdom.

“Philosophical ideas found in ancient languages reflect the depth of human thought since the dawn of civilization,” PM Modi observed, emphasizing the universal relevance of the Tirukkural. Written by the poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar between the 2nd century BC and the 5th century AD, the Kural remains a non-sectarian guide on morality and ethics, transcending religious and community boundaries.

Elevating Strategic Relations

Beyond the cultural exchange, the political outcomes of the trip were equally significant. At the invitation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, PM Modi’s visit served as a catalyst for a major shift in foreign policy. The two leaders agreed to upgrade the existing relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signaling closer cooperation on regional security, economic integration, and defense.

The visit culminated in the exchange of 11 agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), designed to bolster ties across various sectors. As India and Uzbekistan move forward, this visit stands as a testament to how both historical cultural affinity and modern strategic alignment can work in tandem to foster international cooperation.
