Tempus AI has a definitive agreement to acquire Personalis, expanding Tempus’ capabilities in minimal residual disease (MRD). The company sees the transaction as a $20 billion opportunity, extending its reach across the cancer care continuum.
How Personalis Tech Impacts Deal
More specifically, the acquisition unlocks access to industry-leading technology in the rapidly emerging MRD market. Personalis’ MRD tech will join Tempus’ commercial-scale multimodal data and AI platform.
Through this alliance, Tempus hopes to advance cancer monitoring, deepen insights, and accelerate growth.
Tempus Foresees Progress
Tempus CEO Eric Lefkofsky predicts one effect will be faster, more informed decisions by clinicians when cancer recurs.
He also noted the acquisition is a continuation of a partnership first established in November 2023. At that time, Tempus made an investment in Personalis and commercialized its NeXT Personal MRD test.
“MRD is a large and rapidly growing market with the potential to transform how cancer patients are monitored,” Lefkofsky said. “Through our existing collaboration, we have already demonstrated the strength of combining highly sensitive MRD technology with our commercial infrastructure. With clinical adoption and reimbursement momentum building, we are well-positioned to capture this opportunity, which makes this acquisition particularly exciting.”
According to Tempus, new United States cancer diagnoses will exceed 2 million in 2026 alone. Adding to that, more people are living longer after a cancer diagnosis.
Therefore, the need for long-term monitoring is not only critical, but ever expanding. The ultra-sensitivity of the Personalis MRD tests supports this particular need.
Closing of the acquisition is expected in late 2026 or early 2027. The current value of the deal is approximately $1.5 billion.
