In May, the regulator had imposed new restrictions on operations at the site, limiting operator Transwaste to accepting only inert waste, such as soil and bricks, as part of efforts to tackle longstanding odour problems affecting residents across Fleetwood and surrounding areas.
The Environment Agency also ordered the company to install a temporary cap on part of Cell 6, which monitoring identified as the source of the site’s most significant gas emissions.
The work was required under an enforcement notice issued on July 7.
In a community update published on July 24, the regulator said the capping work had been completed by the July 20 deadline and was inspected by landfill specialists on July 21.
Following those checks, the Environment Agency confirmed the work complied with the requirements of the notice and that the enforcement notice had been formally withdrawn.
The agency said the temporary cap had been installed on the southern area of Cell 6, the section of the landfill found to be responsible for the highest levels of gas emissions.
It said the cap should help reduce odour emissions from the site.
However, work on a permanent cap for the whole of Cell 6 is set to continue.
The Environment Agency said it expects residents to notice a reduction in odour but added that officers will continue carrying out monitoring work within the community.
The update also confirmed that Transwaste lodged an appeal on July 17 against the permit variation introduced by the regulator.
The variation limits the operator to accepting inert waste and requires additional gas monitoring points to be installed around the site’s boundary.
Residents can continue reporting odour concerns through the Environment Agency’s incident hotline or online reporting system.
