A seven-year-old boy has died just days after his teenage cousin died while trying to rescue him at West Mersea Beach, Essex.

Musa Ahmed, his cousin Sameeha Rahman, 15, and her mum Shelina Rahman, 41, were out at sea on July 22 when they got into difficulty.

Shelina and Sameeha, from Ilford, east London, died and Musa suffered life-threatening injuries after emergency services arrived at 5.35pm.

A family friend said Sameeha was trying to save her cousin when she died.

His family confirmed today that Musa has died.

In a statement shared by police, they said: ‘We would also like to thank the Royal London Hospital intensive care unit team of doctors and nurses who demonstrated outstanding care and dignity for whilst we have been at the hospital.

‘We would appreciate privacy during this very difficult time.’

Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher said that the Rahman family’s bravery has been ‘humbling’.

‘We continue to build a complete picture of the circumstances which led up to this incident and our work is continuing alongside our partners,’ he added.

The three were swimming with Sameeha’s brother, sister and another family member, when they got into difficulty at about 5.35pm.

Dr Mansur Rahman, Shelina’s husband and father of Sameeha, said last week that the three were swimming with Sameeha’s brother, sister and another family member at the time.

‘I have not been able to answer many phone calls, but please know that I have not intentionally ignored anyone,’ the leader of Jubo Dal UK, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in India, said.

‘The overwhelming support, love, and prayers from all of you mean more to us than words can express.’

Police urged people last week to avoid going to the beach, about eight miles south of Colchester.
