Later in the day, Yamini Mourya settled for a silver in the women’s -57kg after going down to England’s Acelya Toprak, a silver medallist at the last edition, in the final by ippon.
Yamini pushed Toprak through four minutes of regulation and nearly three minutes of Golden Score before a third shido penalty handed the experienced English judoka victory
The Indian judoka had earlier beaten Ghana’s Frema Agyei by ippon in the quarter-final and repeated the feat against South Africa’s Donne Breytenbach in the semis.
There was disappointment for the other two Indians in action on the day. Shraddha Chopade (women’s -52kg) and Rohit Basir Majgul (men’s -66kg) both bowed out after repechage defeats.
Shraddha opened brightly with an ippon win over Sierra Leone’s Jane Massaquoi before losing her quarter-final to Australia’s Tinka Easton and then going down to Wales’ Lola Hodson in the repechage.
Rohit followed a similar path, beating Mozambique’s Samuel Ribeiro by ippon before falling to Cyprus’ Petros Christodoulides in the quarter-final and then to England’s Michael Fryer in the repechage.
Before the opening day of judo events at Glasgow 2026 on Friday, Indian judokas had won five silvers and six bronze at the multisport quadrennial meet.
