Two dead in horror crash on busy Manchester road after car ploughs into digger


A man and a woman died on the scene

Two people have died in a horror crash on a main road in Manchester.

The crash happened on the A57 Hyde Road in Gorton at around 9.35pm on Wednesday evening (August 5). Emergency services descended on the scene, near the junction with Clumber Road, after a car hit a stationary digger.

Four people were inside the car at the time, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said. A man and a woman died at the scene.

No further details on the victims have been released at this stage. Two men were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

They were then subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They are now in police custody, the GMP spokesperson added.

A stretch of Hyde Road from Balmoral Drive to Debdale Lane was cordoned off after the incident. It remained shut for hours overnight as accident investigation work was carried out on the scene.

Police initially said a car had collided with a house, but this afternoon confirmed the vehicle had hit a digger. Detective Sergeant Louise Warhurst, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims in this tragic incident.

“We are appealing for any witnesses who may have saw the moments leading up to this incident, or anyone who has mobile phone, Ring doorbell or dash cam footage, to come forward and assist our investigation.
