North Zone Clinches Duleep Trophy Semi-Final Spot After Clinical Win Over West Zone

North Zone has officially punched its ticket to the semi-finals of the Duleep Trophy after a dominant bowling display dismantled the West Zone tail on the final morning of their quarter-final clash.

Needing 287 runs for victory, West Zone resumed Day 4 at 220/7, trailing by 67 runs with only three wickets in hand. The hopes of a miraculous turnaround were swiftly extinguished by the North Zone spin duo of Abid Mushtaq and Nishant Sindhu, who required just 6.3 overs to wrap up the innings. West Zone was eventually bowled out for 234, handing North Zone a comfortable 52-run victory.

Mushtaq Leads the Charge

Left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq was the standout performer of the match, finishing with remarkable figures of 4/60 in the second innings and a total of 9/99 for the game. His efforts earned him the Player of the Match title. On the final morning, Mushtaq struck early to dismiss Tanush Kotian before removing Tushar Deshpande, who fell to a catch by Abdul Samad.

Nishant Sindhu provided the final blow, trapping Urvil Patel lbw to bring the contest to an end.

The Turning Point

The momentum of the match had shifted decisively in North Zone’s favor during the third day. At one stage, West Zone appeared to be cruising toward the target with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (66) and Musheer Khan (96) putting together a formidable 111-run partnership. However, the game turned on its head when Gaikwad was run out, triggering a catastrophic collapse. West Zone lost four wickets in less than seven overs, adding only 25 runs and leaving their tail exposed to the challenging, low-bouncing conditions on the final day.

Controversy Off the Pitch

Despite the victory, the buildup to the match was overshadowed by selection controversy. Coaches Ajay Sharma and Sarandeep Singh faced criticism for omitting Sanat Sangwan—the third-highest run-scorer in the previous Ranji Trophy season with 828 runs—in favor of Yash Dhull. The decision proved questionable, as Dhull struggled significantly, recording scores of just nine and zero across the two innings.
