Delhi University Faces Enrollment Gap: Over 13,000 Undergraduate Seats Remain Vacant After Three Rounds

New Delhi: Despite concluding three rigorous rounds of undergraduate admissions, Delhi University (DU) is grappling with a significant number of unfilled positions, leaving 13,433 seats vacant across its various campuses. The latest vacancy report, released as of August 23, offers a crucial window for prospective students to secure a spot in one of India’s most prestigious central universities.

The university has identified that these openings are scattered across 1,160 distinct college-course combinations, creating a unique opportunity for applicants who were previously unable to secure their preferred programs.

High Demand vs. Current Vacancies

Data indicates that the highest number of vacancies are concentrated in language and commerce-related disciplines. The B.A. (Hons.) Hindi program currently reports the largest deficit with 1,455 vacant seats, followed by 937 openings in B.Com and 911 in B.A. (Hons.) Sanskrit. Science courses have also seen lower-than-expected enrollment; B.Sc. (Prog.) Physical Science with Chemistry and B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics have 728 and 560 vacancies, respectively.

Across different candidate categories, the largest gap is among OBC-NCL candidates (4,133 seats), followed by ST (2,476), Unreserved (2,113), SC (2,038), and EWS (1,791). Additionally, specific quotas for Sikh and Christian candidates remain under-filled, with 566 and 316 seats available.

Vacancies in Premier Institutions

The current undergraduate admission landscape has surprised many, as even elite colleges within the university framework are reporting open seats.

• Hindu College: 29 vacancies across 11 programs, including sought-after subjects like Economics and Philosophy.
• Hansraj College: 79 seats remaining across 19 courses, spanning disciplines from Computer Science to Botany.
• Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC): Despite being one of the most competitive colleges in the country, SRCC still has two vacancies in Economics and two in B.Com (Hons).

Other institutions face more significant challenges; for instance, Swami Shraddhanand College reports 145 vacant seats in B.Com, while Lady Irwin College and the Institute of Home Economics are looking to fill over 100 seats each in their Home Science programs.

A Fluid Situation

University officials have cautioned that these figures are dynamic and represent the status as of 1:00 PM on August 23. The number of vacancies is expected to fluctuate as ongoing admissions, withdrawals, and cancellations are processed by the administration.

To streamline the final phase of admissions, the university has mandated that students will not be permitted to withdraw their candidature during the upcoming spot round. This measure is intended to stabilize the enrollment process and ensure that the maximum number of students are placed before the academic session progresses further.
