Alleged Rapist Arrested After Returning to Brisbane Crime Scene, Police Say
BRISBANE — A 32-year-old man is facing a string of serious charges after allegedly attacking a young woman during her morning walk in a quiet, semi-rural suburb of Brisbane. In a remarkable turn of events, police say the accused was apprehended after he returned to the scene of the crime hours later.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Thursday in Brookfield, a suburb on the western outskirts of Brisbane. Police allege the woman, aged in her 20s, was walking near the Brookfield Road bridge when she was approached from behind and sexually assaulted. The attacker then fled the scene on foot.
Following an urgent investigation and a public appeal for information, detectives from the Queensland Police Service moved quickly to secure an arrest. By Thursday afternoon, officers had identified and intercepted a vehicle in the local area.
Det Supt Andrew Massingham told reporters that the victim and the perpetrator were strangers, describing the encounter as a random attack. According to police, the accused, Jacob Dave Henry Hauraki of Raceview, had been on his way to work when the assault took place.
“We will then allege that when he completed work that day, he drove back past the crime scene,” Det Supt Massingham said on Friday.
Authorities credited the public for the breakthrough in the case. After the police issued an urgent call for assistance, two witnesses provided dashcam footage that proved vital to the investigation.
“Officers identified the vehicle as being similar,” Massingham explained. “They followed the vehicle, and he was actually intercepted.”
Hauraki has been charged with six counts of rape, as well as single counts of stalking, assault with intent to commit rape, assault causing bodily harm, and deprivation of liberty.
As the legal proceedings begin, police have shifted their focus to the recovery of the victim, who is currently being supported by her family. Det Supt Massingham praised the young woman’s courage in coming forward, confirming that she sustained injuries during the ordeal.
“The [alleged victim] is at home with her family,” Massingham said. “She has been provided with the upmost care medically and psychologically that we can at this time. Our thoughts are with her and her family.”
The case has sent shockwaves through the Brookfield community, and the swift arrest has been highlighted by authorities as an example of how Queensland police rely on the cooperation of the public to solve serious crimes.
