Andrey Santos’ £50m Man Utd transfer from Chelsea confirmed as Michael Carrick factor clear

The summer transfer window has been frustrating for Manchester United but they have wrapped up the signing of Andrey Santos

Manchester United have completed a £50million deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. This comes as a huge boost for Michael Carrick’s side, with a deal for transfer target Ederson appearing to fall through.

United agreed a deal to sign Santos from Chelsea last week as they ramp up plans to strengthen their midfield options during the summer transfer window, with a move for Youri Tielemans also imminent.

Santos has put pen to paper on a long-term contract to become a United player, with the transfer being formally completed after the Brazilian underwent a medical in Manchester last week.

The 22-year-old was not part of the Brazil squad for this summer’s World Cup and will be expected to link up with Carrick’s squad for the start of pre-season training.

Santos made 43 appearances for Chelsea last season across all competitions and will be determined to play a key role in helping United enjoy another successful season.

“Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented,” Santos told United’s club website.

“As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick, he is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams.

“Everybody told me about how ambitious the club is and the amazing environment that has been created here. I know just how strong the squad is and I cannot wait to fight together to compete for the biggest trophies.”

United have been keen to strengthen their midfield options this summer following the departure of Casemiro, who left the club at the end of last month following the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury during the World Cup while featuring for Uruguay, meaning United will not have at least two midfielders available that they had at their disposal compared to last season.

There also continues to be speculation about whether or not United will manage to get a deal over the line for Ederson from Atalanta.

The Red Devils have already reached an agreement over a £38.8m package to sign the Brazil international earlier this summer.

However, reports emerged last week claiming that a deal to bring Ederson to United had fallen through.

The announcement of Santos’ signing comes on the same day that news has emerged that Aston Villa star Tielemans has become a target for United.

The Red Devils have reportedly made an effort to sign Tielemans, who has a £35m release clause in his contract at Villa Park.

The rumours of a potential deal for Tielemans comes amid speculation that a swoop for Ederson from Atalanta may no longer be on the table, with United determined to strengthen their midfield options before the start of the new Premier League season.
