Anupama Parameswaran confirms breakup; recalls ‘narcissistic abuse’: 'It was like living with an ‘Anniyan’'

Actress Anupama Parameswaran Breaks Silence on Traumatic Breakup, Alleges "Narcissistic Abuse"

Mumbai, India – Renowned South Indian actress Anupama Parameswaran has revealed details of a harrowing two-year period marked by what she describes as “narcissistic abuse” during a recent relationship. In a candid interview with Dhanya Varma, Parameswaran opened up for the first time about the emotional and psychological toll her former relationship took on her, shedding light on a deeply personal struggle that has impacted her life and career.

The actress stated that the public’s recent awareness of her breakup followed a prolonged period of suffering. "There are a lot of things behind that post. It was the result of two years of physical and emotional suffering and breakdown. I went through narcissistic abuse for the past two years," Parameswaran shared, referencing an earlier Instagram post that had sparked speculation about her personal life.

An Instagram Post and its Deeper Meaning

Parameswaran addressed the cryptic Instagram post directly, explaining that it was a reflection of her inner turmoil. She revealed that those closest to her – her family, friends, and staff – had already observed a significant change in her behavior. "If I had posted a picture of myself in that yellow dress and written ‘Rest in Peace Anupama, she committed suicide’ instead, I would have received so much love today. There would have been so many discussions. It has been more than a month since the outside world came to know about the breakup. Everyone, including my family, friends and staff, knew that the relationship was not right for me. They noticed a change in me. They realised that I was becoming withdrawn," she elaborated, highlighting the profound impact the relationship had on her well-being.

She further elucidated the insidious nature of narcissistic abuse, noting its subtle and gradual onset. "Narcissistic abuse happens very quietly. People misunderstand narcissists as people who love themselves a lot. But they actually hate themselves. They are insecure. They do not recognise their own worth. Basically, what they want is someone they can control. They seek attention. They constantly want validation and consideration," Parameswaran explained, offering a nuanced understanding of the psychological dynamics at play.

Rapid Progression and Engagement Pressures

Parameswaran recounted the alarming speed at which the relationship progressed. She revealed that her former partner introduced her to his family after just a few dates, with engagement discussions beginning within three months. "After the first one or two dates, he took me to his house. He introduced me to his family, and I had meals with them. Within three months, he started talking about an engagement. His family began asking where it should be held and how many people should attend," she detailed.

The actress disclosed that she ultimately rejected the engagement proposal, seeking more time to consider the commitment. She also took the opportunity to address accusations of being a "gold digger." "To those who call me a gold digger, I want to say that if I had not rejected the demand for an engagement, my marriage to him would have ended in divorce. I was the one who decided that I did not want an engagement. When they asked, I requested some more time," Parameswaran asserted, defending her decisions and motivations.

Career Impact and Missed Opportunities

The relationship, according to Parameswaran, significantly hampered her professional choices. She specifically referenced the critical and commercial success of her film ‘Dragon’, questioning her absence from its promotional activities. "’Dragon’ was the biggest success of my career. Why didn’t I attend its promotions? I turned down many films. He started controlling everything, not just my work but every aspect of my life," she alleged, indicating the pervasive nature of the control exerted over her.

Comparing Her Ex to ‘Anniyan’

In a powerful analogy, Anupama Parameswaran likened her former partner’s fluctuating personality to the characters played by Vikram in the psychological thriller ‘Anniyan’. She described a cyclical pattern of intense affection, followed by cruelty and subsequent apologies. "It was like living with an ‘Anniyan’. On some days, he would be ‘Remo’. You would feel incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful person in your life. The next day, he would be ‘Anniyan’. He would behave in the most cruel manner. The following day, he would apologise, beg, promise that he would never repeat it and cry like a child. This would keep repeating," she vividly recounted.

She further elaborated on the addictive nature of such relationships. "The person who hurts you the most would also be the one who gives you comfort. It is like an addiction. They make you reach a point where you feel you cannot live without them. Even when something has nothing to do with you, you would end up feeling that you were at fault," Parameswaran added, highlighting the manipulative tactics employed in such dynamics.

Anupama Parameswaran’s last cinematic outing was ‘Pet Detective’. Her brave decision to speak out is expected to resonate with many who have experienced similar struggles, bringing crucial attention to the devastating impact of narcissistic abuse.
