NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is adopting a meticulous, long-term development strategy for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. As the 15-year-old’s meteoric rise continues, top officials have made it clear that their primary goal is to ensure he evolves into a generational talent rather than a fleeting sporting phenomenon.
The topic of Sooryavanshi’s rapid progression took center stage at a high-level BCCI review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday. The gathering featured key figures in Indian cricket, including BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, national captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the head of the Centre of Excellence (CoE), VVS Laxman.
“Not a One-Year Wonder”
In an effort to protect the youngster from the crushing weight of public expectation, the BCCI has committed to a structured oversight program.
“We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country, or other players who in the past became legends,” Devajit Saikia stated. “We are very cautious that every right step should be taken forward so that he does not become a one-series or one-year wonder.”
The comparison to Tendulkar is deliberate. Like the “Little Master,” who debuted as a 16-year-old, Sooryavanshi is being thrust into the limelight during his formative years. The BCCI is determined to monitor his physical, mental, and professional growth to ensure he remains a cornerstone of Indian cricket for years to come.

Sooryavanshi’s resume is already extraordinary for someone of his age. His ascent was fueled by a record-breaking 2026 IPL campaign with the Rajasthan Royals, where he smashed 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.30. His record-setting tally of 72 sixes earned him a clean sweep of individual honors, including the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player award.
His transition to international cricket was seamless, marked by a stellar performance against Zimbabwe that saw him claim his first Player of the Series award. Domestically, he continues to shatter history, recently becoming the youngest batter to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy, breaking a 57-year-old record.
A Broader Talent Pipeline
While Sooryavanshi is currently the face of this “next-gen” movement, the BCCI is managing a broader initiative to secure the future of the sport. Saikia highlighted that the board has identified a “targeted group” of 10 to 15 promising players who are being carefully groomed.
“We are looking at all the players,” Saikia added. “These players are constantly monitored by our CoE head, VVS Laxman, who is taking a keen interest in their future, training, and skill development.”
By integrating these youngsters into a centralized support system under the watchful eye of VVS Laxman, the BCCI aims to bridge the gap between age-group cricket and the rigors of the international arena.
