Borussia Dortmund CEO Confirms Interest in Exploring Potential India Tour

Borussia Dortmund is setting its sights on the massive, untapped football landscape of India, as the Bundesliga giants continue their aggressive expansion across the Asian continent. CEO Carsten Cramer has openly acknowledged the club’s desire to visit the country, though he emphasized that any move into the Indian market must be built on a foundation of long-term sustainability.

Over the past several years, the Black and Yellows have systematically strengthened their footprint in Asia. Their efforts have included high-profile preseason tours—most notably a recent trip to Japan—and the establishment of youth training facilities. BVB has successfully launched academies in South Korea, as well as in the Chinese cities of Xiamen and Beijing, bringing their philosophy of football development to a growing international fanbase.

However, India remains a significant missing piece in the club’s global strategy. Despite the nation’s staggering population and a burgeoning passion for European football, no Bundesliga club has yet established a formal, permanent presence in the country.

During a recent interaction with NDTV, Cramer addressed the possibility of an Indian tour with a mixture of humor and strategic foresight. "You didn’t invite me yet," he joked. "If you would send me an invitation, I would seriously consider coming to India."

Beyond the lighthearted banter, Cramer was quick to address the logistical and philosophical hurdles that prevent a "hit-and-run" style tour. According to the CEO, Dortmund is not interested in simply arriving for a single friendly match. Instead, the club is focused on establishing lasting relevance, potentially through the development of local academies and infrastructure.

"What we definitely don’t do is jump into a market without a sustainable approach and target," Cramer explained. "Whenever we make a first step, we know that a second and third have to follow. We have to make more investment to reach a sustainable appearance and relevance in your country."

The club’s interest is not merely speculative. Cramer revealed that Suresh Letchmanan, who leads the club’s Southeast Asian operations, is a strong proponent of the Indian market. The two have engaged in ongoing discussions regarding whether the timing is right for a debut.

As interest in the Bundesliga continues to grow globally, Dortmund appears determined to maintain its status as a forward-thinking club. For now, the dream of a "Black and Yellow" tour in India remains a project under active consideration, awaiting the right moment to ensure that once they arrive, they are there to stay.
