Teenager Charged After Violent Knife Attack Leaves Victim with Near-Amputated Hand in Sydney

A 15-year-old boy has been remanded in custody following a brutal assault in Sydney’s inner-south that left a 17-year-old victim with a “near-complete amputation” of his hand.

Emergency services were scrambled to the Redfern Oval at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening after reports of a violent altercation. Upon arrival, police discovered the 17-year-old victim suffering from severe lacerations to his hand, which authorities described as being barely attached to his wrist.

Investigators believe the incident, which involved the use of a knife, began in a nearby car park on Morehead Road. The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he remained in stable condition on Thursday morning. Medical officials have not yet confirmed whether surgeons were successful in reattaching the limb.

A swift police operation led to the arrest of the 15-year-old suspect roughly six hours later. Officers intercepted a vehicle in traffic near the vicinity of the attack at midnight, taking the teenager into custody without further incident.

The accused appeared before the Surry Hills Children’s Court on Thursday morning, facing charges of wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as a breach of bail.

During the brief proceedings, the teenager remained silent. Judge Keisha Hopgood underscored the gravity of the incident, telling the defendant, “It’s a serious children’s offence.”

Given the severity of the charges and the suspect’s history, no application for release was made. The boy has been remanded in juvenile detention and is scheduled to face court again on 6 October.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this near-complete amputation, an act of violence that has left a young man with life-altering injuries.
