Twelve Arrested in Sweeping Criminal Investigation Following Fatal A66 Collision
Cleveland Police have launched a major, multi-agency investigation into an organised crime network, following a catastrophic road collision on the A66 that claimed seven lives, including two police officers.
The investigation comes in the wake of a horror crash during the early hours of Saturday, August 22, in South Bank. The incident occurred when a Volkswagen Passat, traveling in the wrong direction, collided head-on with a marked armed response vehicle.
The collision resulted in the tragic deaths of PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38. The five occupants of the Volkswagen Passat—identified as Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, and 23-year-olds Michael Robert Cahill and Jakub Matusiak—also perished at the scene.
A Complex Criminal Web
Authorities have now revealed that the tragedy was preceded by a series of reckless criminal acts across Middlesbrough. On the morning of the crash, police received multiple reports of two vehicles—a Volvo XC60 and the Volkswagen Passat—being driven dangerously. The Volvo was reportedly seen ramming properties, and both vehicles were confirmed to be using cloned number plates to evade detection.
In a massive coordinated effort involving support from Durham, Northumbria, and North Yorkshire police forces, Cleveland authorities have conducted a series of raids across Teesside. To date, 12 people have been arrested, with offences ranging from possession of a firearm to participation in an organised crime group.
Among those detained, 26-year-old Cameron George of Redcar has been formally charged with possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs, as well as possession of criminal property. Other suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 61, remain in custody or on conditional bail as the A66 investigation continues.
“Fast-Moving and Complex”
Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox, who is leading the strategic response, described the situation as “a fast-moving and complex investigation with significant links to serious and organised criminal activity.”
“The events of that tragic night will have a lasting and profound impact on the Cleveland area,” ACC Fox stated. “Our duty is to thoroughly investigate the criminal activity that resulted in this fatal incident and to bring all those responsible to justice.”
Addressing the emotional toll on the force, he added: “Two of our colleagues lost their lives while serving the people of Cleveland. While the impact will be felt for a long time, our officers have continued to act with the utmost professionalism.”
The Timeline of the Incident
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently overseeing the details of the police pursuit. Intelligence regarding the suspects’ activities had led to a police chase, which lasted just under seven minutes. When the Passat entered the A66 against the flow of traffic, officers immediately aborted the pursuit for safety reasons. The fatal collision occurred approximately 10 seconds later.
While speculation regarding social media involvement circulated online, police have confirmed there is currently no evidence to suggest that the illegal activities were being filmed for platforms like TikTok.
As the investigation into the criminal network deepens, the community has rallied to support the grieving families of the fallen officers, with a fundraiser in their honor already surpassing £460,000 in donations.
