Norway has entered a period of deep national mourning following the death of its beloved sovereign, King Harald V. The royal palace confirmed on Friday morning that the monarch passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 am. He was 89 years old.

The death of the King marks the end of an era for the Scandinavian nation. Flags at the Royal Palace in Oslo have been lowered to half-mast, and a steady stream of citizens has begun gathering outside the gates to leave floral tributes and candles in honor of the man who served as the country’s figurehead for over three decades.

A Legacy of Stability

King Harald V, who ascended the throne in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V, was widely regarded as a warm, inclusive, and modernizing force for the Norwegian monarchy. Throughout his reign, he was frequently praised for his ability to connect with the public and his commitment to uniting the Norwegian people during times of change.

Despite facing persistent health challenges in recent years—including the surgical implantation of a pacemaker—the King remained steadfast in his duties. He famously resisted calls for his abdication, citing the sacred lifelong oath he took before the Norwegian parliament upon his accession.

Final Days

The King’s health had been in a precarious state since he was admitted to Oslo University Hospital on August 17 to receive treatment for haemolytic anaemia, a condition characterized by the premature destruction of red blood cells.

By Thursday, the situation had escalated significantly. The palace issued a statement describing his condition as “extremely serious,” prompting members of the royal family to rush to his bedside. Crown Prince Haakon, who is now expected to step into the role of sovereign, reportedly kept a vigil by his father’s side throughout the night.

In response to the deteriorating news, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre cancelled a planned official trip to Germany, choosing to remain in Oslo to manage the government’s response to the transition.

A Nation in Grief

As details regarding memorial services and the succession process emerge, tributes have begun to pour in from across the political spectrum. Many citizens remember Harald V not just as a monarch, but as a stabilizing presence who embodied the values of a modern, democratic Norway.

The passing of the monarch is a profound loss for the country, and as the government coordinates the period of official mourning, the nation reflects on the life and service of King Harald V.

Euronews is monitoring the situation closely and will provide further updates as they become available.
