Filip Nowacki has ended Jersey’s 36-year wait for a Commonwealth Games medal, winning silver in the men’s 100m breaststroke in Glasgow.
The 18-year-old touched the wall in 59.34 at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre on Saturday night, just 0.17 seconds behind Australian Sam Williamson’s 59.17, who took gold.
The world junior champion is just the fifth person to stand on a Commonwealth Games podium for the Channel Island.
It was 1990 when Jersey last tasted medal success. Colin Mallett won fullbore shooting gold and teamed up with his father Cliff to win pairs bronze. The Island’s only other medals came in boxing in 1986 and 1962.
