Bruno Guimaraes tells Newcastle he wants Arsenal transfer with £60m offer readied

Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Arsenal throughout the summer, but there could soon be a breakthrough for the Gunners

Arsenal transfer target Bruno Guimaraes has informed Newcastle United he wishes to leave the club. The Magpies skipper has been linked with a move to Mikel Arteta’s side this summer.

Newcastle have been insistent on keeping the Brazilian World Cup star having already accepted a £100million bid from Tottenham Hotspur for Guimaraes’ midfield partner Sandro Tonali. However, things could get tricky for Eddie Howe’s side, as Guimaraes is believed to have made it clear he wants to depart St. James’ Park.

Guimaraes was linked with Arsenal before he moved to the Toon from Olympique Lyon in the January 2022 transfer window. After four years, and a season which saw Newcastle fail to qualify for Champions League football after finishing 12th.

According to The Athletic, Guimaraes wants to leave the club. Last month, Arsenal made a verbal offer of around £55million be rejected by Newcastle.

However, it’s also claimed they have indicated they are willing to fork out up to £60m to sign the World Cup star. Guimaraes was one of Brazil’s most important players throughout the World Cup.

While their round of 16 exit to Norway was disappointing for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, Guimaraes stood out by contributing four assists in five appearances in the USA.

So far, Newcastle’s position on Guimaraes’ future has been that he is not going anywhere. They have already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m and Tonali has moved to Spurs for £100m.

Guimaraes has been instrumental for Newcastle, who have qualified for the Champions League twice and won the League Cup since his arrival in 2022. After they ended their trophy drought which had lasted since 1955, Guimaraes actually said he wants to become a Newcastle legend.

He opined: “This is my second home. We are making history. Some day, when I leave this club, I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to (Alan) Shearer.”

Nevertheless, Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta are both determined to sign Guimaraes. They believe he can feature alongside Declan Rice in a mouth-watering partnership or stand in for the England international, whose work load has been considerable.

For Arsenal, Rice made 55 appearances for the Gunners, missing only two Premier League matches and two Champions League fixtures. He has also been playing at the World Cup with a neural hamstring injury which has not ruled him out of any England matches, but has left him in pain.
