Carlos Sainz signs new multi-year F1 contract

Carlos Sainz Commits to Williams with New Multi-Year Deal, Bolstering Team for 50th Anniversary

GROVE, UK – In a significant show of faith in the iconic British racing outfit, Carlos Sainz has officially penned a new multi-year contract with Williams, solidifying his future with the team as it approaches its monumental 50th anniversary season in 2027. This announcement, coming shortly after teammate Alex Albon also extended his commitment, ensures Williams will retain one of Formula 1’s most experienced and formidable driver pairings for the foreseeable future.

The news, initially reported by RacingNews365 over the weekend, confirms that Sainz has agreed to an extension that includes enhanced protections, reflecting his pivotal role within the team and effectively fending off interest from rival outfits. The four-time Grand Prix winner had previously expressed concerns regarding the team’s long-term prospects, particularly in light of the impending 2026 technical regulations. However, his decision to re-sign underscores a renewed confidence in Williams’ trajectory and strategic vision.

Sainz and Albon are now set to embark on their third successive season as teammates, a partnership that James Vowles, Team Principal of Williams, proudly declared as "one of the strongest line-ups on the grid." This continuity is a crucial building block for a team determined to reclaim its former glory.

Since joining Williams from Ferrari, Sainz has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence. He notably secured two Grand Prix podiums – in Azerbaijan and Qatar – marking Williams’ first podium finishes since Lance Stroll in 2017 (excluding George Russell’s rain-affected second place at the 2021 Belgian GP). He also added a third-place finish in the US Grand Prix Sprint, further demonstrating his consistent performance and ability to seize opportunities.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new deal, Sainz stated, "I’m thrilled to announce my continued journey with the Williams F1 Team family. I truly believe in the people who form this team, both at the factory and at the racetracks, and the investments and hard work that are happening in the background. We have what it takes to turn this around together. I’m as committed as I was on day one to helping get Williams back to where it belongs, and I look forward to creating more memories with the team."

Vowles echoed Sainz’s sentiments, highlighting the Spaniard’s leadership and unwavering dedication. "From the moment he joined, Carlos’ talent behind the steering wheel and dedication back at the factory have been extremely valuable for this project – working day in, day out with his engineers to find every millisecond," Vowles commented. "He is a leader of this team, and I’m thrilled that he can see what’s possible as we continue to rebuild it. It’s not just his racecraft and speed that stand out, but the work he does behind the scenes in the pursuit of high performance. Carlos shares the belief and ambition we have at Williams F1 Team and is pushing every day to deliver it. Along with Alex, I truly believe we have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid, and a team capable of fighting for every ounce of performance together."

The dual contract extensions of Sainz and Albon send a clear message about Williams’ commitment to stability and strategic growth. With an experienced and highly respected driver pairing, combined with significant investments and a renewed sense of purpose, Williams is positioning itself as a serious contender in the competitive landscape of Formula 1 as it looks towards a promising future.
