Hockey World Cup 2026: India beat Pakistan 5-3 to reach second round

India Dominates Arch-Rival Pakistan in Thrilling 5-3 Victory, Securing Second Round Berth at FIH Hockey World Cup 2026

Amstelveen, Netherlands – In a high-octane encounter that lived up to its billing, India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 to storm into the second round of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. The exhilarating Pool D clash, held at the historic Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on Wednesday, showcased an offensive masterclass from the Indian side, highlighted by spectacular individual performances.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek were the stars of the show for India, each netting two crucial goals. Harmanpreet opened India’s account in the 5th minute and added another in the 21st, demonstrating his prowess from penalty corners. Abhishek, equally impressive, found the back of the net in the 11th and 24th minutes. Hardik Singh sealed India’s dominant performance with a calmly converted penalty stroke in the 35th minute.

Pakistan, despite their best efforts, struggled to contain the Indian onslaught. Hannan Shahid provided a glimmer of hope with two goals in the 22nd and 46th minutes, while Sufyan Khan also got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute. However, their valiant attempts were not enough to overcome India’s superior attacking force.

This decisive victory propels India into Pool E of the second round. They will be joined by England, who secured a perfect nine points in the opening phase after a commanding 8-2 win over Wales earlier in the day. Pool E will also feature the top two teams from Pool A, which includes hockey powerhouses such as the Netherlands, Argentina, New Zealand, and Japan, setting the stage for more thrilling encounters. The top two teams from Pool E will advance to the semi-finals of the prestigious Hockey World Cup.

The match started with India on the offensive, quickly asserting their dominance. After forcing consecutive penalty corners, Harmanpreet Singh unleashed a powerful drag-flick that sailed past Pakistani goalkeeper Ali Raza, putting India in the lead within the first five minutes. Six minutes later, Abhishek doubled India’s advantage with a shot that deflected off a Pakistani stick, finding its way into the net.

India carried their momentum into the second quarter. Harmanpreet struck again in the 21st minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Rajinder Singh’s initial penalty corner attempt was saved. Pakistan, however, responded almost immediately, with Hannan Shahid scoring in the 22nd minute after Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera made two quick saves.

Abhishek restored India’s three-goal cushion just two minutes later, maneuvering through a crowded circle before his attempted pass deflected in for his second goal. Sufyan Khan kept Pakistan in the contest by converting a penalty corner in the 25th minute, bringing the score to 4-2 at the end of a pulsating first half.

Five minutes into the second half, India extended their lead further. Aditya Arjun Lalage was brought down inside the circle, resulting in a penalty stroke. Hardik Singh stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, making it 5-2.

Pakistan refused to give up, with Hannan Shahid grabbing his second goal early in the final quarter, finishing off a counter-attack to reduce India’s deficit to two goals. However, India’s defense held firm for the remainder of the match, securing a hard-fought 5-3 victory and extending their impressive unbeaten run against their long-standing rivals.

This encounter marked the first India vs. Pakistan meeting at the Hockey World Cup since 2010, a match India won 4-1 in New Delhi. The Wagener Hockey Stadium holds a special significance for this rivalry, having been the venue where India defeated Pakistan 1-0 in the semi-finals of the 1973 Hockey World Cup, with BP Govinda scoring the decisive goal.

While Pakistan still leads the overall head-to-head record, India has undoubtedly dominated the rivalry in recent years. Pakistan’s last victory over India dates back to the 2016 South Asian Games final. Since then, India has maintained an unbeaten streak of 20 consecutive matches against their neighbors, securing 18 wins and two draws. This latest triumph follows India’s double victory over Pakistan during the London leg of the FIH Pro League in June, where they won 4-3 and 7-1, further solidifying their current supremacy in this historic sporting rivalry.
