‘Coco 2’ confirmed: Production house confirms new project with Ernesto De La Cruz’s return as the villain

The highly anticipated sequel, Coco 2, has been officially confirmed for release in 2029, much to the delight of fans worldwide. This exciting news emerged from the D23 Expo, an event known for unveiling a plethora of upcoming projects, from Marvel’s new ‘X-Men’ cast to the trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The production house responsible for the original cinematic triumph made the announcement, showcasing tantalizing image teasers of the forthcoming animated feature.

A significant revelation at the expo was the return of Benjamin Bratt, who lent his voice to the flamboyant antagonist Ernesto De La Cruz in the first installment. Bratt himself took to the stage to confirm his reprisal of the role, much to the excitement of attendees. The teased images offered glimpses of a teenage Miguel, accompanied by his loyal canine companion, Dante, as well as a direct confrontation between Miguel and De La Cruz.

Viral videos from the event captured Bratt’s enthusiastic announcement, where he playfully remarked, “To some, Miguel is a little menace who ruined a career and destroyed a legacy. Ernesto de la Cruz is back for revenge, sending Miguel on an adventure back to the Land of the Dead. Proving fate has a sense of humor, Miguel must team up with a handsome superstar: me.” Further cementing the project’s stellar team, Bratt also confirmed that Lee Unkrich, the acclaimed director of the original film, would be returning to helm the sequel, joined by Adrian Molina. The official release date has been earmarked for November 2029.

The original ‘Coco,’ released in 2017, captivated audiences with its vibrant exploration of Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead traditions. The narrative followed Miguel, a young aspiring musician born into a family that has forbidden music for generations. His defiance led him to steal a guitar belonging to the legendary Ernesto De La Cruz, inadvertently transporting him to the colorful and mystical Land of the Dead. The film was not only a critical darling but also a monumental commercial success, reportedly grossing USD 800 million at the box office, as per Sacnilk reports at the time. Its subsequent online release further solidified its status as a beloved entertainment phenomenon.
