Members received updates on progress made during the last year, alongside reports setting out the priority actions that will help shape the council’s environmental work over the coming 12 months.
The reports highlighted positive progress across a range of initiatives, including work to improve the energy efficiency of council buildings, support nature recovery and biodiversity projects, and secure external funding for major decarbonisation schemes.
A key focus for the coming year will be delivering projects that reduce emissions from council buildings, one of the largest sources of carbon emissions within the council’s operations, alongside continued work to improve climate resilience and protect Wirral’s natural environment.
While the reports recognised that some carbon reduction targets were not achieved during the year, they also outlined plans to accelerate progress in the areas where the greatest emissions savings can be made.
As the council moves beyond many of the actions that delivered earlier reductions in emissions, future progress will increasingly depend on larger and more complex projects, particularly those aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels for heating and transport.
The committee noted the progress made over the last year and endorsed the priority actions for the year ahead, supporting the council’s continued commitment to tackling the climate emergency while protecting and enhancing Wirral’s environment.
The reports considered by the committee can be viewed on the council website under the agenda and papers for the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee meeting held on 8 July 2026. A recording of the meeting is also available to watch online.
