Commonwealth Games 2026 weightlifting: Harjinder Kaur adds silver after Nirupama Devi’s loss ends India’s medal streak

Earlier in the day, Nirupama Devi Seram became the first Indian weightlifter to miss out on a medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after failing to register a lift in the clean and jerk in the women’s 63kg event.

Nirupama was placed fifth after the snatch with a best effort of 93kg. She failed her opening attempt before successfully clearing the weight on her second lift, while her bid to improve to 95kg with the final attempt was unsuccessful.

Her campaign unravelled in the clean and jerk, where she failed to clear 123kg in all three attempts, resulting in a did not finish (DNF) and leaving her without a total.

The result ended India’s run of medals in weightlifting at Glasgow 2026, with the country having reached the podium in each of its first six events.

India have now won seven weightlifting medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Mirabai Chanu struck gold, while Harjinder Kaur, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Rishikanta Singh, Raja Muthupandi and Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver medals. Bindyarani Devi has a bronze.
