India Responds to Trump’s Praise, Highlights Robust Electoral System
New Delhi: India has acknowledged former US President Donald Trump’s recent commendation of its electoral system, reiterating that the "credibility and robustness" of its election machinery are globally recognized. Trump cited India’s stringent voter identification process as a model for the United States, advocating for similar measures to combat alleged electoral fraud.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "I have no specific comments on these remarks. I can say, however, that the credibility and robustness of India’s election machinery is a well-established fact globally." This statement underscores India’s confidence in its democratic processes and its standing on the international stage.
Trump’s comments, shared via a social media post, highlighted the impressive scale of India’s recent general elections, where over 646 million people cast their votes. He particularly emphasized that less than one percent of these votes were cast by postal ballot, contrasting this with the US system.
The former president went on to recall a conversation where India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, reportedly questioned the absence of mandatory voter identification in American polls. According to Trump, Kumar had engaged with officials from his administration earlier this month, expressing puzzlement over the US election procedures.
"Earlier this month, India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration — How can you have elections in the US without a valid photo ID," Trump wrote. He further asserted, "India’s last election had 646,000,000 voters! Less than one per cent voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID photo identity document."
Trump leveraged India’s example to garner support for his proposed "SAVE America Act." This legislative initiative aims to introduce stricter electoral regulations in the United States, including requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration, implementing a nationwide voter identification mandate, and significantly restricting mail-in voting. Trump asserted the urgent need to pass this act, which he has consistently championed as a means to safeguard American voter eligibility.
