Indie Developer Denounces “Humiliating” Steam Censorship Over Misclassified Game
An independent developer is speaking out against Valve’s rigid content moderation policies after their latest project, Future? No Thanks!, was inexplicably flagged as “pornographic” by Steam. Despite the game receiving an ESRB “Teen” rating and a PEGI 12 classification, Valve’s refusal to adjust the game’s 18+ adult-only status has left the developer struggling to navigate what they describe as a “surreal” and “humiliating” ordeal.
Developed by Molleindustria, Future? No Thanks! is a narrative-driven, open-world adventure centered on an elderly protagonist attempting to fulfill their bucket list before passing away. While the game features a whimsical and wholesome aesthetic, its journey to the Steam storefront has been marred by what the developer describes as a bureaucratic nightmare.
A Quest for Clarity
The friction began in July, when the game’s release was delayed due to concerns over “mild nudity.” Specifically, the game previously contained low-resolution, untextured polygons depicting anatomy tied to an optional achievement titled “Have Sex One Last Time.”
In an attempt to appease Steam’s guidelines, the development team opted to remove the “sex quest” entirely. However, even after scrubbing the content and resubmitting the game, Valve has refused to budge on the adult-only classification.
The developer took to the social media platform Bluesky during Gamescom in Cologne to express their mounting frustration. “We are currently at Gamescom… everybody is asking us why they can’t see the PAGE of a Teen rated game,” the developer wrote. “This has been the most humiliating and surreal experience in 20+ years of game making.”
Accessibility Hurdles
The fallout extends beyond mere labels. In the UK, the game’s 18+ rating triggers strict compliance measures under the UK Online Safety Act. Accessing the store page currently requires users to verify their age through a valid UK credit card. For those who do not use credit cards, the game is effectively invisible, forcing potential players to navigate cumbersome age-verification hurdles simply to view a title that international rating boards have deemed appropriate for pre-teens.
The developer remains desperate for a dialogue with Valve, noting, “I’m looking for anybody who knows anybody at Valve that can at least tell me what’s going on.”
A Pattern of Over-Moderation
This is not the first time Valve has faced criticism for its heavy-handed approach to “adult content.” The situation mirrors the controversy surrounding Santa Ragione’s indie horror title, Horses, which was removed from storefronts due to an explicit scene that was eventually cut from the final build—yet the game remained sidelined despite the removal.
Industry observers have noted that Valve’s automated moderation systems often lack the nuance to distinguish between genuine pornography and artistic expression. As noted by the developer in recent reports, the current situation creates a frustrating double standard: a game with the visual profile of a harmless indie adventure is being categorized alongside explicitly adult-themed titles like Sex With Hitler.
As of now, Future? No Thanks! remains locked behind an adult-only paywall on Steam, leaving its creators searching for a way to appeal a decision that seems fundamentally disconnected from the actual content of their work.
