Modding Community Successfully Patches NVIDIA DLSS 5 to Run on RTX 40-Series GPUs
The landscape of PC gaming technology has been shaken this week following the discovery of an unreleased NVIDIA file. After the leaked DLL for DLSS 5—an early-access asset pulled from NBA 2K27—made its way into the wild, the modding community acted with remarkable speed to bypass hardware restrictions, successfully getting the technology running on older architecture.
While the leaked tool was designed exclusively for NVIDIA’s upcoming Blackwell (RTX 5000) series, persistent modders have managed to force compatibility with the current-generation RTX 4000 series (Ada Lovelace). This breakthrough, which has seen the DLSS 5 tool applied to titles like Skyrim, marks a significant development for enthusiasts looking to squeeze more longevity and performance out of their current hardware.
Overcoming the Architecture Barrier
The core challenge in this porting effort was the underlying code. The DLSS-NR (Neural Rendering) model relies on FP8 precision. While Ada Lovelace GPUs are physically capable of handling FP8 operations, the binaries within the leaked DLL were strictly compiled for the Blackwell “sm_120” architecture, leaving no native instructions for the RTX 40-series or earlier chips.
A modder operating under the alias “Uncle Burrito” bypassed this bottleneck by identifying the incompatible binaries and manually swapping them with versions optimized for Ada Lovelace. Initial tests, including those verified by Tom’s Hardware on an RTX 4080, confirm that the patch is functional, if still somewhat experimental. Reports from the RenoDX Discord indicate that multiple developers are now refining these patches, leading to visible improvements in lighting and facial fidelity within games.
The Future of Official Support
The success of these community-driven patches raises an inevitable question: will NVIDIA provide official support for older cards upon the formal launch of DLSS 5?
Currently, NVIDIA remains silent on the matter. While the RTX 40-series appears to be a viable candidate for official support due to its FP8 capabilities, the outlook for previous-generation Ampere (RTX 30-series) cards is much bleaker. Because Ampere lacks native hardware support for FP8, achieving the same level of performance and stability—even with modding—would be significantly more difficult, if not impossible, without massive emulation overhead.
