Duleep Trophy Final Set for Major Venue Shift, Spectators Expected
Bengaluru/Chennai: The highly anticipated Duleep Trophy final, originally slated for the closed-door BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, is now expected to be relocated to a more prominent stadium, either the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru or the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This significant change aims to allow spectators to witness the championship match, a move that has been actively pursued by the BCCI.
The inter-zonal tournament is scheduled to commence on August 23rd, featuring six teams vying for the coveted trophy. The quarterfinals and semifinals will proceed as planned at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, located on the outskirts of Bengaluru. However, the final, scheduled to take place from September 6th to 10th, has prompted a reevaluation of the venue.
The BCCI’s decision to explore alternative venues stems from a desire to open the final to the public. Matches held at the CoE are typically played behind closed doors, a scenario the board appears keen to avoid for the tournament’s climax. When questioned about the possibility of spectators during his recent visit to the CoE, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia affirmed, "We will definitely look into the aspect of hosting the match with spectators; we still have time." This statement signaled the board’s proactive stance in finding a solution.
Initially, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) was approached earlier this week and reportedly agreed to host the finale at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, a potential hurdle emerged. Following a stampede outside the stadium last year, a court ruling has imposed extensive protocols on the KSCA if spectator attendance exceeds 5,000. This could present logistical challenges and additional costs, potentially making the Chinnaswamy Stadium a less straightforward option.
In light of these considerations, the cricket board broadened its search on Tuesday, reaching out to the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with its rich cricketing history and capacity to host large crowds, has now emerged as a strong contender. The TNCA’s infrastructure and experience in managing high-profile matches make it an attractive alternative for the BCCI’s goal of ensuring spectator access to the Duleep Trophy final.
The final decision on the venue is expected soon, as the BCCI continues to weigh its options to deliver a memorable Duleep Trophy final, complete with the vibrant atmosphere that a live audience brings. Cricket enthusiasts across the country will be eagerly awaiting the announcement, hoping to witness the culmination of this prestigious domestic tournament firsthand.
