Elgin Schools Shakeup: District Taps Interim Chief to Steer Amid Leadership Void

ELGIN — The Elgin School District has officially named a familiar face to lead the district during its current period of transition. On Friday, Oct. 30, the school board announced that veteran educator Larry Glaze has been appointed as the new interim superintendent.

The announcement brings a seasoned leader back to the Union County community, where Glaze has deep historical ties. Board President Ellie Fincher expressed the district’s enthusiasm regarding the appointment, emphasizing that Glaze’s extensive background makes him uniquely qualified to provide stability.

“We value the knowledge and experience he brings and are excited to have him,” Fincher said in a statement released Friday morning.

Glaze’s appointment comes with the backing of five decades of work within Oregon’s public education system. His career began 51 years ago, starting as a teacher and coach. Following his initial five years in the classroom, he transitioned into administration, where he has spent the last 46 years serving as a school principal or superintendent across the state.

His administrative tenure includes leadership roles in a wide range of settings, from smaller districts like Dayville and Long Creek to the much larger La Grande School District. Glaze spent 23 years in La Grande, serving as an elementary principal for 14 years and as superintendent for nine before his retirement in 2017.

Since retiring, Glaze has become a sought-after expert for interim leadership roles. Mark Mulvihill, Superintendent of the InterMountain Education Service District, praised Glaze’s work ethic and professional reputation.

“Larry has been a trusted colleague for over 20 years. He is an outstanding educational leader who brings a wealth of experience and prior success to Elgin,” Mulvihill said. “He possesses high integrity, competency, and drive. Each district he has served in an interim role has expressed their strong appreciation for his work.”

For Glaze, the new role is a return to a community he knows well. This appointment marks his third stint working for the Elgin School District. He previously served as the principal of Stella Mayfield Elementary from 1983-86 and returned to serve as the high school principal and superintendent during the 2007-08 school year.

“I have always had a special place in my heart for Elgin School District,” Glaze said. “The teachers are so dedicated to serving the children in the best way possible, and the parents and community appreciate and support the educators serving their children. It is a rewarding and worthy professional endeavor for me to serve the community of Elgin once again.”

Kit Evans, vice president of the Elgin School Board, confirmed that Glaze has already begun making an impact within the district, signaling a smooth start to his interim tenure.
