Dermatology Confronts its Carbon Footprint: A Call for Sustainable Skincare Practices

The study highlighted that “purchased goods and services” constituted the largest proportion of these emissions. Specifically, emissions linked to a U.S. academic dermatology outpatient clinic were predominantly traced back to indirect sources, particularly those embedded within supply chains and services.
Dermatology Practices Grapple with Distinct Sustainability Hurdles
One area of particular environmental concern within dermatology is the widespread application of topical formulations. This includes not only essential medical ointments but also ubiquitous sunscreens and a vast array of cosmeceuticals. The components of these products, their often-elaborate packaging materials, and the inclusion of poorly biodegradable ingredients can collectively exert considerable environmental pressure through waste streams and detrimental impacts on delicate ecosystems.
Beyond topical treatments, procedural dermatology warrants further in-depth evaluation. The environmental ramifications of treatments such as laser procedures, microneedling, and platelet-rich plasma therapies remain insufficiently studied. As these procedures become more commonplace, a thorough understanding of their ecological footprint is crucial for developing sustainable alternatives and practices.
Paving the Way for Sustainable Dermatology Care
The aforementioned review underscored that effective sustainability strategies must encompass both climate adaptation and mitigation. Adaptation involves fortifying healthcare systems to withstand climate-related challenges, while mitigation zeroes in on actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions through fundamental changes in healthcare delivery.
For dermatology, potential actionable steps are numerous and varied. These include, but are not limited to, improving waste management protocols, optimizing the use of resources, actively reducing unnecessary care, and seamlessly integrating sustainability considerations into daily clinical workflows. Furthermore, the advent and expansion of teledermatology offer a promising avenue to support sustainability goals by significantly curbing transportation-related emissions, particularly when appropriate for patient care.
Encouragingly, several prominent dermatology organizations have already established dedicated sustainability-focused working groups. These initiatives are designed to foster education, catalyze research, advocate for policy changes, and facilitate the widespread implementation of environmentally conscious practices. Their overarching goal is to equip dermatologists with the necessary resources and to champion the broader integration of sustainability principles throughout dermatological care.
The authors of the review concluded that achieving deep-seated sustainable practices across dermatology will necessitate continued collaboration, enhanced education, and robust policy development. By fostering a greater awareness of the environmental impact inherent in dermatology, clinicians can be empowered to identify pivotal opportunities to reduce emissions without compromising the delivery of high-quality patient care.
