Etihad Airways Upgrades Gothenburg Route to Year-Round Service Following Surge in Demand

Etihad Airways has announced a major update to its flight schedule, confirming that its highly anticipated new route between Abu Dhabi and Gothenburg will now operate year-round. Originally unveiled just three weeks ago as a seasonal winter service—slated to run from December 17, 2026, to March 21, 2027—the route has seen such overwhelming interest from travelers that the airline has decided to cement its place in its permanent flight network.

A Rapid Response to Market Interest

The decision to extend the service comes on the heels of exceptional booking numbers recorded since the route was first announced. The demand has proven to be truly global, originating both from Western Sweden, where travelers are eager for a direct link to the Gulf and beyond, and from across Etihad’s international network, with passengers keen to explore the coastal charm of Sweden’s second-largest city.

Arik De, Etihad Airways Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, acknowledged the airline’s initial underestimation of the route’s popularity. “Three weeks in, the market has told us we underestimated Gothenburg, and we are glad to be corrected,” said De. “The strength of demand this early gives us the confidence to make Gothenburg a year-round service before the first flight has even taken off.”

Bridging Markets

For residents of Western Sweden, the new schedule provides a consistent gateway to Abu Dhabi’s world-class leisure, culture, and business offerings. Furthermore, the capital serves as an ideal transit point for those looking to reach Etihad’s expanding network across Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Passengers can also leverage the airline’s popular “Abu Dhabi Stopover” program, which offers up to two complimentary hotel nights, turning a layover into a miniature vacation.

Conversely, the extension of the service into the summer months allows international visitors to experience Sweden at its best. Beyond the winter season, summer in Gothenburg offers a unique appeal, characterized by long, sun-drenched evenings, vibrant food markets, and the picturesque, tram-accessible islands that define the Swedish archipelago.

Operational Excellence

Gothenburg marks the 15th new destination launched by Etihad in 2026, underscoring a year of aggressive and strategic growth. This expansion has been made possible largely through the integration of the Airbus A321LR aircraft, which provides the precise capacity and operational efficiency needed to sustain long-haul connectivity in new markets.

Mats Johannesson, CEO of Swedavia Airports, lauded the swift adjustment to the schedule. “To see it extended to a year-round schedule within three weeks says a great deal about the appetite in West Sweden for direct connections to Abu Dhabi and Etihad’s global network,” Johannesson stated.

Flight Details

The route, which commences on December 17, 2026, will operate four times weekly. The A321LR fleet assigned to the route features an intimate three-cabin configuration:

  • First Class: Two suites.
  • Business Class: 14 seats with direct aisle access and lie-flat capability.
  • Economy Class: 144 seats equipped with 13.3-inch 4K touchscreens.

Passengers across all cabins will enjoy high-speed Wi-Fi, with seamless connections available to destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore, Bali, Shanghai, and Bengaluru.

Travelers looking to secure their seats on this newly expanded service can now do so as Etihad upgrades Gothenburg to year-round via the airline’s official website.
