Dell 14S wants to rival the MacBook Neo

Dell Takes Aim at Apple’s MacBook Neo with New Ultra-Portable 14S Laptop

The landscape for affordable, premium-feeling laptops is shifting. Apple’s MacBook Neo has long dominated the market by offering a high-quality, reliable experience at an entry-level price point—though its value proposition has been tested recently by industry-wide price hikes. Now, Dell is stepping into the fray with a direct challenge: the newly announced Dell 14S, unveiled this week at IFA.

Designed for the Everyday User

Positioned specifically as an accessible machine for students and young professionals, the Dell 14S emphasizes “everyday performance” and portability. Despite its aggressive entry-level positioning, the device boasts a sleek aluminum build that rivals more expensive hardware, measuring just 13.5mm thick and weighing in at a highly portable 2.5 lbs.

Under the hood, users can choose between Intel Core Ultra 3 or Core Ultra 5 processors, ensuring enough power for academic workloads and daily productivity. The device also features a 16:10 display with optional 120Hz refresh rates, providing a fluid visual experience. Connectivity is robust for a thin-and-light device, featuring two USB-C ports, an HDMI port, and a dedicated headphone jack. Perhaps most impressive is Dell’s battery performance claim: up to 21 hours on a single charge.

A Pricing Power Play

While Dell has not confirmed the exact starting price for the 14S, company messaging suggests it will sit comfortably below the XPS 13’s $699 base price. By positioning the 14S as a “compelling alternative” to the MacBook Neo, Dell is signaling that it intends to undercut Apple in the budget-conscious category.

In a recent blog post, Dell clarified its strategy: “The Dell 14S is designed to be complementary to [the] XPS 13 and accessible for students and young adults globally. We’re committed to making sure regional pricing reflects that.”

A Note on Branding

In an ironic twist, Dell has acknowledged some confusion regarding its naming conventions. This marks the second time this year that the company has released a product named the “14S.”

To differentiate the two, Dell clarified that the previously released model was built for high-end creators, whereas this new iteration is “all about everyday performance, long battery life, and a colorful design.” While the identical naming may cause some initial head-scratching for consumers, the clear divergence in target demographics should help clear the air once the devices hit retail shelves.

The Dell 14S is expected to arrive in the United States this fall. Pricing details for individual markets will be disclosed closer to the official launch date.
