Olympic Champion Alysa Liu Announces Break from Competitive Skating
Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu has announced that she will sit out the 2026-27 figure skating season, opting to step away from the ice to focus on artistic growth and technical development.
The 21-year-old, who made history in February at the Milano Cortina Games by becoming the first American woman to win Olympic gold in singles figure skating since 2002, confirmed the news via social media. In addition to her individual triumph, Liu played a pivotal role in leading the United States to a gold medal in the team event.
Despite her recent success, Liu will miss the upcoming World Championships scheduled for March in Finland. In an Instagram post explaining her decision, the star athlete expressed a desire to evolve beyond the high-pressure environment of top-tier competition.
“I always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry and skating can evolve. It’s important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth,” Liu wrote. “I’m going to take the time to recalibrate, fine-tune things, and whatnot. So fear not, I’ll be back, and in the meantime, I’ll be rooting for my teammates near and far.”
Speaking with NBC Sports, Liu emphasized that the decision was a holistic one. “Logically and emotionally and physically, this just makes the most sense,” she said, noting that while she will miss the camaraderie of the international circuit, she is confident that this pause is necessary for her long-term career.
This is not the first time the figure skating community has seen the young prodigy step away from the spotlight. Liu’s journey has been marked by resilience and unconventional timing. As a child prodigy, she became the youngest US champion in history at just 13 years old. In 2022, she briefly announced her retirement from the sport at the age of 16, only to make a sensational return that saw her crowned world champion before reaching the pinnacle of the sport at the Milano Cortina Olympics.
As fans look forward to her eventual return, Liu’s decision highlights a growing trend among elite athletes who are increasingly prioritizing mental and physical longevity over the relentless grind of consecutive competitive seasons.
