Schools are shutting in the UK to protect pupils amid soaring temperatures

More than 850 schools are reportedly closed across the UK today (Wednesday) amid a record-breaking heatwave.

Hundreds more schools will close early to protect pupils in the soaring temperatures. The Met Office has warned temperatures could hit 40C in some parts of England and Wales as a ‘heat-dome’ settles over western Europe, with a rare red extreme heat warning issued.

According to the Mirror, more than 850 schools have announced either full or partial closures for today. Some schools have decided to shut after lunch time with others moving to online learning.

The Dixons Newell Green Academy in Wythenshawe is closing early today and on Thursday amid the extreme hot weather. In a message sent to parents, seen by the M.E.N, the school said it will close at 12.55pm.

Children at some schools have been told they can wear PE kit rather than full school uniform, which can involve long trousers and blazers. Some after-school clubs have also been cancelled.
