GB News was interrupted for a breaking announcement as Angela Rayner spoke out against Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The former deputy prime minister has taken to X with a lengthy statement, calling on Sir Keir to set out changes, adding that what the Labour Party is currently doing is clearly “not working” after a “historic defeat” in the local elections. She also said it was wrong for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to be blocked from potentially returning as an MP and that the party needs to better serve working people.
Delivering the breaking update to viewers, GB News Chief Political Correspondent Katherine Forster revealed that many had been waiting for Rayner to speak out following Labour’s disastrous local election results. Forster said: “A big moment this. Angela Rayner, former deputy prime minister, a big beast in the Labour Party. We’ve been waiting for her to say something and she’s just said it.
“She said, ‘What we are doing isn’t working and it needs to change. This may be our last chance.’ She goes on to say, ‘The Labour Party must now live up to our name. We must be the party of working people.’
“She goes on to warn that they’re risking becoming the party of the well-off, but not working people. She says that the cost of living for everybody is the number one issue, that people feel hopeless and she says things could be so much better than this.”
The star continued: “She says that to deliver the change that is needed, they need to bring our best players to parliament. She seems to get the scale of the challenge. It sounds like a call to bring Andy Burnham back.
“The prime minister is now absolutely in the fight of his life.”
Presenter Nana Akua claimed that Rayner had “missed the point” after her statement suggested that moving further to the left was the answer to Labour’s problems.
She acknowledged that the Labour Party has always stood for working people, but said: “The problem is the policies they’re putting forward do not help working people.
“Everything they have done so far has affected the very base they’re meant to help.”
Forster added: “At the moment, the working class seems to feel that Labour have abandoned them and they are going in very large numbers to Reform.”
