However, Ashwin firmly believes that the team management owes Sarfaraz unequivocal clarity regarding his future role. He emphasizes that captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir should communicate Sarfaraz’s position clearly, rather than leaving him in a state of uncertainty.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, ‘Ash Ki Baat’, Ashwin stated, “I’ll start with Jurel. Sarfaraz came into the squad because of Sai Sudharsan’s injury. The messaging is very important for Sarfaraz. If you feel he is a suspect in certain conditions, you need to give him clarity. You need to tell him that he can serve the team in sub-continental conditions.” Ashwin postulates that if Sarfaraz is indeed perceived as less effective in particular conditions, then this needs to be directly conveyed to him. This clear communication would enable Sarfaraz to dedicate his efforts to areas where he can truly excel, especially against spin, thereby establishing himself as a formidable force in sub-continental conditions.
Given his adeptness at handling spin bowling, a characteristic that could prove invaluable in the spin-friendly conditions of Galle, a place for Sarfaraz in the playing XI makes compelling tactical sense. He is known for his nimble footwork against spinners and his ability to maintain a brisk scoring rate by applying pressure on them. His well-honed sweep shot is another potent weapon that could disrupt a spinner’s rhythm and compel them to alter their line and length.
