“Go and Educate Yourself”: Anaya Bangar Hits Back at Marizanne Kapp Over Cricket Return
NEW DELHI: Anaya Bangar, who is currently navigating a path back to competitive cricket under Cricket Australia’s (CA) transgender inclusion policy, has fired back at critics—specifically South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp—urging those opposed to her participation to better inform themselves on the nuances of the situation.
The controversy stems from CA’s decision to grant Bangar, the daughter of former Indian cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar, a pathway toward elite women’s cricket. Following the announcement, Kapp publicly labeled the move as “absolutely ridiculous,” stating firmly that such participation “should not be allowed.”
A Call for Education
Addressing the backlash during an interview with PTI, Bangar remained composed but firm. She challenged her detractors to look beyond personal opinions and engage with the scientific data provided.
“I think people who want to raise their voice against it should actually educate themselves on this topic,” Bangar said. “I’ve already provided the necessary information in terms of not having any unfair advantage, and also complying with the guidelines set by Cricket Australia. If anyone’s personal opinion is in that sort of way, I hope they go and educate themselves.”
Rigorous Eligibility Criteria
Bangar, who underwent gender-affirming surgery in March, emphasized that her pathway into the sport is neither automatic nor informal. According to the 25-year-old, Cricket Australia conducted a comprehensive review of her medical and surgical history, hormone levels, and past cricketing footage.
To satisfy the policy requirements, she also provided scientific data regarding her athletic performance, analyzed in conjunction with the Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute of Sport. Notably, she highlighted that her most recent medical testing in July recorded a total testosterone level of 0.6 nanomoles, placing her well within the standard female reference range.
“Baby Steps” Toward the WBBL
Currently eligible for community-level cricket in Australia, Bangar is actively seeking a local club to begin her return to the pitch. While she harbors ambitions of one day competing in the prestigious Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), she maintains that her immediate focus is on earning her spot through consistent performance.
“Basically now, the next role is to go there and play club cricket and prove myself by my performances,” she said. “If I do well, I hopefully might have a chance to be picked for the Women’s Big Bash League. So, baby steps from here, but the major part of having a place to play has been cleared.”
Bangar, who admits to having spent a long period in “survival mode” during her transition, views the CA decision as a major milestone. While the policy provides a potential pathway, she is clear-eyed about the road ahead, noting that the clearance does not guarantee selection, leaving the ultimate test to her abilities on the field.
